Saab . How to Change the Oil Pan Gasket on a 1997 Cadillac1997 Cadillacs, like all automobiles with internal-combustion engines, has an oil pan located under the vehicle that holds the oil when it's not circulating through the engine. The oil pan is held onto the engine bottom by a series of bolts; between the oil pan and the engine block is a gasket that seals the oil pan to the engine block. If you remove the oil pan for any reason, you'll need to replace the gasket. The replacement of this gasket is simple. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need 3/8-inch drive ratchet 3/8-inch socket New oil pan gasket for a 1997 Cadillac Oil drain pan Gasket scraper Oil filter for a 1997 Cadillac 5 quarts 10W-30 motor oil Crescent wrench 2 car jack stands Hydraulic car jack Step by Step : 1 Allow the engine to cool down completely. 2 Locate the center jacking point under the Cadillac's front frame section. 3 Center the hydraulic jack under the jacking point and turn the knob clockwise to prepare the jack to raise the vehicle. 4 Raise the vehicle up so that the jack stands will fit under each of the Cadillac's side support points. 5 Place the jack stands under the support points and engage the locking bar. 6 Lower the hydraulic jack by slowly turning the knob clockwise until the car is seated on the jack stands. 7 Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug. 8 Remove the oil drain plug using the crescent wrench and turning counterclockwise. 9 Remove the oil filter using the oil filter wrench and turning counterclockwise. Step by Step : 10 Remove all the oil pan bolts by using the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch socket, turning counterclockwise. Step by Step : 11 Separate the oil pan from the engine block with the blade of the gasket scraper. Step by Step : 12 Remove all the gasket material from the oil pan and the engine block using the gasket scraper. Step by Step : 13 Install the new oil filter by hand-turning clockwise. Turn the oil filter hand tight then turn 1/2 to 2/3 more by hand. Step by Step : 14 Place the new oil pan gasket on the oil pan, lining up the holes in the gasket with the holes in the oil pan. Step by Step : 15 Position the oil pan against the engine block, lining up the bolt holes in the pan with the bolt holes in the block. Step by Step : 16 Hold the oil pan in place and start a bolt on each end of the oil pan to hold it in place. Then start all the bolts until they are hand tight. Step by Step : 17 Use the 3/8-drive ratchet and 3/8-inch socket turning clockwise to install all the oil pan bolts.Tighten the bolts in an alternating pattern from side to side so that the oil pan seats evenly. Step by Step : 18 Reinstall the oil pan drain plug by using the crescent wrench and turning the plug counterclockwise. Step by Step : 19 Open the hood and open the oil fill cap located on the left side of the engine. 20 Fill the engine with 5 quarts of 10W-30 motor oil and reinstall the oil fill cap. 21 Slide the hydraulic jack back under the front of the car and center it at the middle jacking point. 22 Raise the car up off the jack stands by turning the knob clockwise and lifting and lowering the jack handle. 23 Remove the jack stands and lower the hydraulic jack slowly by turning the knob counterclockwise until the car is on the floor. 24 Start the engine and allow it to run and circulate the oil into the filter. Turn off the engine and wait about 5 minutes for all the oil to drain into the oil pan. Locate the oil level dipstick. Pull it out, wipe it clean, replace it fully into the dipstick tunnel, wait a second or two, and pull it out again. Check that it has oil up to the full mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill the engine. This can cause serious engine damage. Tips & Warnings Don't forget to put the oil drain plug back into the oil pan or you will have a mess. Make sure you put 5 quarts of oil in the engine. The engine take 4 quarts and the filter takes 1 quart. Make sure you remove all the gasket material. Any leftover material will cause leaks. The job will take about 1 hour to complete. Do not attempt this procedure when the engine is still hot. This will cause severe burns. Make sure to use the proper oil for the Cadillac that is listed in this article. Do not mix oils.
Saab . How to Change an Oil Pan Gasket in a 1995 Chrysler LeBaronThe oil pan on your 1995 Chrysler LeBaron makes up the lower part of the crankcase. A gasket and sealant prevent oil from leaking between the pan and the engine block. But if the gasket in your LeBaron has developed leaks because of years of service or damage, you can easily replace it. Before you start though, make sure you have on hand the proper silicone sealant. This procedure applies to the 3.3.L and 3.8L engine models. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Wrench set Floor jack 2 jack stands Large catch pan Ratchet Long ratchet extension Socket Rubber mallet, if necessary Plastic scraper Soft wire brush Solvent Lint-free piece of cloth Mopar silicone rubber adhesive sealer Torque wrench New drain plug gasketRemoving the Oil Pan and Gasket Step by Step : 1 Detach the negative (black) battery cable using a wrench. 2 Remove the engine oil dipstick. 3 Raise the front of your LeBaron using a floor jack and install a couple of jack stands under the frame for support. 4 Place a large catch pan under the engine oil pan. Then remove the oil-pan drain plug using a wrench and let the oil drain completely. 5 Replace the drain plug on the oil pan using a wrench and remove the large catch pan from under the car but leave it on hand. 6 Unscrew the mounting bolts around the flange of the oil pan using a ratchet, long ratchet extension and socket. Then remove the oil pan from the engine. If necessary, slightly strike the sides of the oil pan with a rubber mallet to free the pan from the engine. 7 Move the large pan under the engine to catch the oil dripping from the engine. 8 Remove and discard the old oil pan gasket. Then remove any gasket material and sealant left on the oil pan flange and under the engine mating surface using a plastic scraper and soft wire brush to prevent damage to the surfaces. 9 Clean the oil pan and engine mating surface with solvent and wipe dry with a lint-free piece of cloth. Installing the Oil Pan and Gasket Step by Step : 1 Apply a 1/8-inch (3.2mm) bead of Mopar Silicone rubber adhesive sealer where the chain case or cover (front of the engine) and the engine block join underneath. Also, apply a 1/8-inch (3.2mm) bead of the same adhesive where the rear seal retainer (rear of the engine) and the engine block join underneath. These two areas are part of the engine block gasket mating surface says Robert Maddox in "Chrysler Mid-size Front Wheel Drive: Automotive Repair Manual." 2 Remove the large catch pan from under the engine. 3 Position the new gasket on the oil pan gasket surface and hold the pan in position under the engine. 4 Install the oil-pan mounting bolts finger tight using the long ratchet extension and socket. 5 Tighten and torque the oil pan mounting bolts evenly and using a crisscross pattern. Torque the bolts to 17-foot lbs. (23 Nm) using a torque wrench. 6 Remove the oil drain plug from the oil pan and install a new gasket. Then replace the drain plug using the wrench. 7 Lower the vehicle. 8 Refill the engine with engine oil. 9 Reinstall the engine oil dipstick. Step by Step : 10 Wait for the silicone adhesive to dry according to the instructions on the product label. Step by Step : 11 Attach the negative (black) battery cable using the wrench. Step by Step : 12 Start the engine and check for oil leaks around the oil pan and drain plug. Then turn off the engine. *turn and move in any direction — up, down, and from side to side. 9. The differential (see Figure 9-3) is another box of gears that takes the movement of the spinning driveshaft through a 90-degree angle to the axle that turns the drive wheels. It also allows each side of the axle to rotate at a different speed. This ability is necessary because, when you go around a sharp curve, the outside wheel travels farther than the inside wheel and has to move more quickly than the inside wheel, just like the ice skater at the end of a snap-the-whip line. 411

The differential also provides the drive wheels with extra power by using its gears to convert every three revolutions of the driveshaft into one revolution of the drive wheels, which is called a 3:1 gear ratio. On front-wheel-drive cars, the differential is located inside the transmission; that's why it's called a transaxle assembly. 1 Axle A^L ^ Gears rJ^HB^S*------ Differential m*TSMP"**THfti IW1 I rim 1 T Saab . The principles involved are fairly simple, and an automatic transmission does basically the same things, just without a manual clutch and with less manual shifting. What a manual transmission consists of This section takes a look at each major part of a manual transmission. I covered most of them in the drive train section earlier in this chapter. This section should put them into closer perspective. The gearshift The gearshift can be located on the steering column or on the floor in front of, or between, the front seat(s). Older cars designed for the general market used to have shifts with three forward speeds located on the steering column (very old cars had a two-foot gearshift located in front of the driver). Then sportier models with four forward speeds emerged. The gearshift in these cars was located on the floor, which gave rise to the term "four on the floor." Today, most vehicles with manual transmissions have floor shifts with five forward speeds. And some sports cars have standard gearboxes with six forward speeds. Saab . In each case, you step on the clutch pedal with your left foot to disengage the clutch disk from the flywheel so that the engine's crankshaft can turn independently of the transmission's input shaft. Otherwise, if you attempted to shift gears without using the clutch, the gears in the transmission would rotate at different speeds and would clash and break their teeth. The clutch consists of several major parts, each of which is listed here (refer to Figure 9-1 to see where these parts are). The section "Taking Care of Your Clutch" in Chapter 17 provides instructions for dealing with many of them. The clutch pedal is located on the floor of the car to the left of the brake pedal. The clutch pedal is connected to the clutch release lever via linkage. Sometimes a cable is used; most newer cars use hydraulic components.
